How often have you experienced couples doing wonderful work in the office  and then not being able to sustain it when they leave?

Maya Kollman says, “I know that has happened to me many times and is often so discouraging for the couple and the therapist.  In this day long workshop, I will show how enacting the change in the office, actually practicing the change of behavior and processing what it feels like and what resources each member of the couple can use, greatly increases the chance that the couple can sustain the change at home.”

This all-day workshop will help you:

    1. Understand the environment that inhibits change and the environment that enhances change and learn how to create the supportive change environment.
    2. Know how to help couples try out new behaviors in the office to see if they are effective.
    3. Find ways other than just sitting and talking that enhances the connection between a couple.

In addition, doing this work requires couples to get out of the traditional therapy chairs and move around which can enliven the work and make it more like real life, and much more fun.  And so like the work, this training will also incorporate some fun!

The Joys and Struggles of Cross-Cultural Intimate Partnering

American culture is a feast of colors, lifestyles, histories, religions, ideals, and languages. This workshop focuses on couples who invite new "guests" to their family of origin's table through partnering with someone from a different cultural background. Together, we will explore the unsavory conversations that these couples must face including racism, historical, trauma, oppression, privilege, and alienation. In the end, we will leave with the sweet taste of validation, as we are reminded that love is delicious!

Using Poly Vagal Theory in Couples Counseling

The autonomic nervous system powerfully defines our clients’ experiences of safety and influences their capacity for connection.  Operating outside of conscious awareness, autonomic circuits assess safety and risk and initiate actions to navigate the challenges of daily living.  In this workshop participants will first learn the organizing principles of polyvagal theory and then explore practices to help couples identify and interrupt their familiar response patterns and strategies to shape their autonomic nervous systems toward safety and connection.

    Deb Dana

My passion for neuroscience leads me into collaboration with researchers to better understand the science and psychology of lasting change. This passion informs my clinical work, my teaching, and my writing.  I have a particular interest in Polyvagal Theory and the influence of the autonomic nervous system in shaping the ways we move through the world.

We come into the world wired to connect.  With our first breath we embark on a biologically driven quest to feel safe in our bodies, our environments, and in relationship with others. Life experiences often interrupt our path toward safety and connection propelling us instead into patterns of mistrust and dysregulation.

    Along our path to healing...

We learn to safely remember our histories and become active authors of our life stories.

We investigate the origins of our patterns of protection and connection.

We explore creating relationships that bring joy, movement that feels free, and daily living experiences that are filled with abundance.
